The Strasburg Valley Railroad Company History

There are two versions of our history, the real one and a fun RR one.

The Real Saga of the SVRR

The SVRR was started in 2004 after I was given the I Love Toy Trains set for Christmas. It had a 0-4-0 and a colorful train of freight cars. The only reason I am into O gauge is because I watched the I Love Toy Trains show and wanted the set. Then I saw all the great stuff in O gauge so wanted to stick with that scale. I first built a nice 4x8 figure 8 tables with my father. I spend from then on to now asking for things for the train’s etc. After that, I started to buy a number of Lionel Ready to run sets until I had four. Then we got another table and had 2 loops of track running. Next to the figure 8. That was a Christmas table, because I got 2 Christmas sets, the Holiday Tradition and Polar Express along with a ton of rolling stock etc. Time went on; I got more engines etc and finally got permission to build a huge 8x12 with a mountain in the middle with anther track on top for Christmas. We did this after Christmas 06; by first making the 8x8. Then adding to the table a little at a time. In August 07, we added the figure 8 layouts with the 8x8 and now have a huge 8x12 layout. We extended the tracks and added accessories. We Hope to have a working yard with a town. This wills all take time to do. After all Rome was not built it a day. But we have bought a turntable, just has to be hooked up. Right now we are working on building our engine roster, so the layou may have to take a break for a little while.

The Not So Real Saga of the SVRR

The Strasburg Valley Railroad Company began as a small shoreline from Strasburg PA to Paradise Pa, where we had one small 0-4-0 engine that handled our small freight line. We then started to enter the passenger business and got many more engines and cars. We eventually bought ex PRR and ex CNJ; tracks to New Jersey with stations in Three Bridges, Flemington, Ringoes and Lambertville were we had a primary freight line with a small passenger train on the weekend. Business was doing well. We had a few diesels as we do now, but never gave up on steam, which made us popular, that brought us to expanding again, to where we bought the Long Island Railroad, but operating the some way they did with the exception of having our name on the cars and engines. We also stared some small steam tourist’s lines that people always enjoy riding, but also connect with other large RRs like NS and CP rail for our freight. The future is bright and the RR hopes to expand more in the future.
